Graduate Case Studies - Tim Woodall - Marketing - Intermusica
Name: Tim Woodall
Age: 22
Where you studied: University of Southampton
What you studied: Music
Can you give your work title and what it is you actually do?
Marketing Assistant at Intermusica. I assist the Marketing and Publicity Manager in all Intermusica’s marketing activities: providing print materials to promote our artists, tours and projects, managing the company website and promoting a number of London concerts. I am personally responsible for managing company-wide press reviews and maintaining Intermusica company press kits.
Were you always interested in this career?
I always wanted to work in the music industry. I discovered at university that my attributes and ambition led me towards an administrative role rather than performing. I am looking to working towards a career in arts management.
What do you wish you’d known when you were an undergraduate?
That life will never be that enjoyable again!
Do you have a postgraduate qualification? If so, has this helped your career?
No, although I would consider doing one at some point.
What do you like most about your job?
The variety – I have having a number of tasks on hand at a time, as well as being involved in longer-term projects that offer possibilities to think innovatively and creatively.
Are there any downsides to what you do?
Not really, although I don’t get to be involved with music/musicians on a day-to-day basis, and I don’t have a particularly hands on aspect to my work.
What do you think are the most important skills/strengths you need to make a success of what you do?
Main strengths include: a genuine love for music, which is the motivation for working in the music world, a strong work ethic, the ability to get on with those around you, and interest in the media and marketing area of the arts.
What would be your best piece of advice for graduates wishing to come into this sector?
Looking for a relevant internship is definitely a good idea. Other than that, spend your spare time while studying getting involved in various arts organisations so you have a well rounded CV.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Working in this area of the arts is definitely a rewarding field in which to work.
