Graduate Case Studies - Louisa Dowson - Tesco - Support Office

Louisa-Dowson

Name: Louisa Dowson
Job: Support Office (Joined Tesco October 2002)
Degree: Politics and International Studies, University of Warwick

You're given responsibility straight away at Tesco. I was involved in a number of projects, from a Grab'N'Go project that serves pre-cut/wrapped cheeses from the deli so customers don't have to queue, to reviewing cleaning contracts, working with Commercial as a Beers, Wines and Spirits Retail Representative and, of course, training in stores. All of these gave me fantastic experience that's helped me in my career.

The working environment is founded on trust so there's an expectation that you're ready to deliver no matter how new you are! The great thing is the level of support that you receive from immediate teams and functions around the business in delivering.

Variety has to be expected when you work for Tesco and change comes thick and fast, so you've got to be flexible. It's one of the best things about working here. It keeps your outlook really fresh, as you're constantly learning about new areas and departments, and in turn developing new skills. I've been responsible for budget management, writing external documents that were handed out at the Annual General Meeting, developing Point of Sale for new offers, and communication to all levels of the business.

The support you receive from everyone is fantastic when you're on the Graduate Programme. Everyone is really welcoming which is reassuring when you're new. The programme offers all types of training/skills to help you achieve your ambitions as well as support to get you speaking to people who can help you develop or learn more about wherever you want to go.

What amazed me was the amount you learn in 18 months. When I take time to reflect on what I've achieved it always surprises me!
