STUDENTS URGED TO GET STREET-SAVVY
Students are being urged to be extra-cautious and street smart in university cities due to an increase in a bizarre initiation ritual carried out by city gangs. Known as ‘bag a student’, gang members target students as they are seen as soft victims possessing ‘desirable’ items such as ipods, iphones and expensive laptops.
For many students, attending university is the first time they have lived in a big city, and many openly display expensive phones or other electronic equipment, not realising this makes them vulnerable to attack. In order to minimise the risk police in the West Midlands are advising students to stay in groups and watch out for each other, keep expensive gadgets out of sight, and to only ever take licensed taxis.
