Social work is a career in the front line that is both emotionally rewarding and mentally challenging for graduates. It is perhaps best summed up by the strap line from the government's social care recruitment campaign: "Social work is about people, it's as simple and complicated as that."
Social workers are a professional group within the care sector, and the term can only be used by people who are registered and have a formal professional qualification. The sector serves two million users accessing over 30,000 provider organisations. Local authorities employ a third of the workforce and most of the rest are employed in the private and voluntary sectors. Increasing numbers of workers are self-employed.
