Degree and university: Cardiff University, BSc International Business Administration
Title: Marketing Co-ordinator, Rackspace.
What do you actually do? I joined Rackspace as a member of the Q Team, which gave me a great understanding of Rackspace, its technology, the marketplace and how it serves them. I recently changed jobs to become marketing co-ordinator and assist with the administration of various marketing functions within the department including events and team coordination.
Were you always interested in marketing as a career? No, not at all, but working for Rackspace has brought me much closer to the sector and made me more interested in technology.
What do you most like about what you do and are there any downsides? By assisting my team members I get a great insight into all aspects of marketing. We’re a tight knit team and always bounce ideas around and helping each other out. Being a part of a great team has really helped me settle into my new role.
What skills do you believe you need to succeed? I feel for this role you certainly need to be organised. Attention to detail and the ability to multi-task are essential. You must be able to work well under pressure and must have a desire to work as part of a fast-paced team – which is great because it doesn’t go unnoticed by your superiors.
What advice would you give other students wishing to come into this sector? For people who have no experience in this sector, I would advise them not to worry. Take advantage of any opportunities to learn more. I would also recommend reading any industry related articles as it will help keep you up-to-date with this fast paced sector.
Is there anything you wish to add? I would say to take every opportunity to learn from your fellow colleagues as they have been in the industry longer and can offer some great pieces of advice. After leaving university, you have a lot of knowledge, but you then need to learn how to use it in day-to-day working life, which is usually a lot different to what you expected it to be.
