Graduate Public Sector Jobs

public-sector

Public Sector

Start salary: £17,000-£21,000
Professional salary: £30,000-£51,000
Required qualifications: A minimum 2.2 in any subject
Jobs available: Over 6 million people working in the public sector, a decrease of -1.5% from 2010

Whilst it's one of the biggest sectors, it's shrinking at the moment and looks to be going down even further.
Working in the public sector covers a wide range of careers from teaching and working in the NHS to the military, intelligence services and civil service which includes local and national government. Naturally this branches down into an enormous number of actual job roles from lawyers, care workers and policy makers.
The public sector attracts a lot of graduates, all keen to give something back to society and make a difference. But if money is all that drives you, then the public sector will probably not appeal. On the flipside, career progression, particularly on the graduate 'fast-track' schemes, can be swift, and other benefits - such as holidays - are notoriously good. However, be warned: competition for these roles is fiercer now than it's ever been.
