Graduate Case Studies - Clare Harrison - Financial Journalist - Cross Border Group

Clare-Harrison

Name: Clare Harrison

Age: 23

Degree/University: Politics, Philosophy & Economics (PPE), Oxford University

Year of Graduation: 2006

Occupation: Financial journalist, Cross Border Group

What do you do in your job?

I write articles and features for financial magazines. I also speak at conferences and chair events as well as presenting award ceremonies.

What was your motivation in applying?

I wanted to be a journalist where I would also be paid a good salary. I am interested in current affairs, news and writing. I applied ultimately because the position would offer me a good grounding in journalism. The company was small and independent, and because of that I was given much more responsibility.

What do you enjoy about your job?

I like the freedom to be creative. I can choose what I write about, who I interview and go and see. The job is as varied as I want it to be and I get to meet some very senior people despite the fact that that I have only just graduated! I get to travel a lot: in the space of nine months I have been to Singapore, Poland, France and Switzerland.

Any advice to readers considering a career in your field?

It is important to try and get some basic journalism experience such as working for your local paper or student paper. If you are interested in finance in particular read the FT so you are aware of what is happening in that area. I found out about an English paper abroad and offered to volunteer which gave me some great work experience. It is important to have really good communication skills, although most of the journalism skills can be picked up after you start.
