Graduate Case Studies - Alicky Denton - CIS Corporate Investigations - Business Researcher

Alicky-Denton

Name: Alicky Denton

Age: 26

Degree/University: Russian and Spanish Cambridge University

Year of graduation: 2004

Occupation:  Business Researcher, Russia and CIS Corporate Investigations

What do you do in your job?

I research and write reports on companies and individuals in Russia and the former Soviet Union. A lot of the work involves searching the internet and databases for information and any risks to business associated with the subject of the research. I then have to write up the information in a report. For most of the work I also have to obtain information from in-country sources, depending on how much is publicly available.

What was your motivation in applying?

I decided I wanted to work in this industry while I was studying for my MA in Russian politics. I wanted to have a career in which I could use my skills – researching and writing – and which I would find interesting. It was a perfect combination of what I am good at and what I am interested in.

What do you enjoy about your job?

The chance to use my brain. It is busy and sometimes stressful, but it is a good feeling to have the chance to stretch myself every day.

Advice to readers considering a career in your field:

Most people who work in the industry have worked in other related areas previously, such as journalism, finance and insurance. It is not essential, but it helps to have professional (as well as academic) experience of research and concise writing. It is also a great asset to have an MA in politics or international relations or something similar. You do not necessarily need a regional specialisation. However, if you do decide to specialise, you need to have a very good understanding of the political and business environments in the country or region.
