Mind-the-Skills-Gap-Trap

Avoid the skills gap trap

London recruiters are taking their search for high calibre graduates overseas due to a skills shortage in the UK, according to new research.

Almost 60% of firms in the capital are already plugging the skills gap by recruiting abroad, and 83% of those say they are looking for degree-level candidates.

This trend may be set to grow: two out of every three companies surveyed said that they expect a skills shortage over the next six months.

These results come from the London Business Survey carried out by the Confederation of British Industry and KPMG.

The most in-demand skills are team working, communication and a positive attitude. A third of bosses also said that there is a shortage of managerial skills.

Ian Barlow, London senior partner at KPMG, said: 'Young people must leave education with the skills that businesses need, not just paper qualifications.'

'This survey clearly demonstrates how much employers value basic and employability skills in preference to just qualifications.'

But it's not all doom and gloom: demand for graduates of all nationalities is set to grow, with 68% of those surveyed expecting an increased need for higher-level candidates.
