Case Study - Jodie Miller - Graduate Engineer - Fletcher Construction

Name: Jodie Miller

Age: 25

Education: BEng Civil Engineering at Coventry University – 1st Class.  Post-graduate Diploma Civil Engineering at Coventry University – Distinction.

Employment: Fletcher Construction, NZ since Feb 09.

1. Why did you choose the profession?

I chose to be a civil engineer because I have always been overwhelmed by the great feats of civil engineering that surround us and make an impact on our lives. I chose a challenging career that enables me to make a difference to society, to help protect our built and natural environment and to improve living conditions for mankind.

2. Greatest achievement/project?

My greatest achievement to date has been securing my current role in New Zealand with only two years previous experience.  I am working as a Site Engineer on a one year working holiday visa, seeing the world while gaining invaluable construction experience.   The project is a new emergency department for a local hospital - the scheme certainly has its challenges as six months after construction, the Client changed the scope from a two-storey structure to four floors.

3. Why do you think other people should become civil engineers?

I think others should consider a career in civil engineering as it is a challenging and rewarding profession that enables you to make a positive difference to civilisation.  Civil Engineers are needed all over the world and there is a wealth of exciting opportunity out there.

4. What attributes do you need to be a civil engineer?

I think a good civil engineer needs to be open minded to new ideas, determined, a problem solver, a team player, a good communicator with good time management skills and the ability to work under pressure.

5. What are your aspirations?

Once my year in New Zealand is over, I will continue my antipodean adventure to work in Australia for a further six months.  I hope to sit my professional review for Chartership with the Institution of Civil Engineers within two years of returning to the UK.  From here, I aspire to become a Senior Project Co-ordinator with business management experience.

6. Why did you choose to work for your company?

Fletcher Construction have an excellent reputation within New Zealand and are one of the major contributors to the country’s economy.  They provide excellent project opportunities, great benefits and treat their staff as valued team members, not just numbers.
