Jodie Miller - Graduate Engineer, Atkins Highways and Transportation
Name: Jodie Miller
Age: 23
Education: BEng Civil Engineering at Coventry University. Currently studying an MSc in Civil Engineering part-time to fulfil educational requirements to become chartered, again at Coventry University.
Employment: Atkins Highways and Transportation, Chelmsford, Essex since July 2006.
1. Why did you choose the profession?
I chose to be a civil engineer because I have always been overwhelmed by the great feats of civil engineering that surround us and make an impact on our lives. I chose a challenging career that enables me to make a difference to society, to help protect our built and natural environment and to improve living conditions for mankind.
2. Greatest achievement/project?
My greatest achievement to date has been successfully designing and project managing a safety scheme to completion. By implementing remedial measures on the central reservation of a dual carriageway that has experienced several fatal accidents, the risk of a repeat incident should now be greatly reduced.
3. Why do you think other people should become civil engineers?
I think others should consider a career in civil engineering as it is a challenging and rewarding profession that enables you to make a positive difference to civilisation.
4. What attributes do you need to be a civil engineer?
I think a good civil engineer needs to be open minded to new ideas, determined, a problem solver, a team player, a good communicator with good time management skills and the ability to work under pressure.
5. What are your aspirations?
I hope to become a chartered civil engineer with overseas experience acting as a senior project co-ordinator with business management experience.
6. Why did you choose to work for your company?
I chose to work for Atkins as they offer a varierty of disciplines with offices around the world. I was impressed by their portfolio of projects and the training agreement offered. As they are such a large company, the number of experienced staff is fantastic, there are so many people who have led fascinating careers to learn from.
