ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers)

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is a global membership organisation that promotes and advances civil engineering around the world. Our purpose is to qualify professionals engaged in civil engineering, exchange knowledge and best practice and promote their contribution to society.

Our members help to create the structures and systems that sustain society. They are responsible for designing, building, maintaining and improving bridges, roads, canals, docks, hospitals, schools, airports, power stations, railways, flood defences and water-treatment facilities all over the world.

We make sure that the high standards needed to become a professional civil engineer are met. Professionals who are awarded membership of our Institution are among the best in the world.

There is more than one way to qualify as a member of our Institution. We welcome engineers, technicians and others who develop the built and natural environment. Several types of membership are available to reflect different achievements. People can apply for membership at any stage of their career, from student to senior engineer.

People applying to become professionally qualified civil engineers must have a good understanding of basic engineering principles and the construction process and show that they are competent. A peer review tests whether they have the full range of skills necessary to qualify as a member.

A professional qualification can help you move up the ladder and improve your career prospects. It can provide you with added credibility when it comes to applying for the best jobs, as well as the opportunity to work on diverse and challenging projects both domestically and internationally. A professional qualification can also bring added esteem and respect to both yourself and your organisation.

CASE STUDIES FROM THIS EMPLOYER

Jodie-Miller

Jodie Miller - Graduate Engineer - Fletcher Construction

I chose to be a civil engineer because I have always been overwhelmed by the great feats of civil engineering that surround us and make an impact on our lives.

Kieran-OConnor

Kieran O'Connor - Bridges - Team Leader

As I enjoyed maths and geography at school and wanted a career that would give me the opportunity to travel whilst not see me stuck in an office all day, I chose to do a degree in civil engineering.
