Civil Service Fast Stream

BE WHERE IT MATTERS

What is Fast Stream?

The Fast Stream is the Civil Service's accelerated development programme for graduates with the potential to reach the very top. There is a huge commitment to deliver a diverse Civil Service. Joining the Civil Service means having the opportunity to make a difference on issues that affect the entire country and beyond, such as education, unemployment, food safety, healthcare and international relations and development.

Career Opportunities

Whatever your degree discipline, your skills and your interests, there is a wealth of challenge and stimulation on offer within the Civil Service. Fast Streamers begin their careers with a series of placements or 'postings' - different jobs within their departments. Your career will be developed within three broad professional areas. The three career groups are distinct but complementary. There are Policy Delivery, Operational Delivery and Corporate Services Delivery. Be assured that you will be supported while you learn to enable you to gain the skills you need to succeed.

Seeking from Fast Streamers

We expect a minimum of at least a 2:2 in any degree discipline and generally you must be a UK National. Fast Streamers come from a wide range of backgrounds, but there are certain attributes every Fast Streamer must have. These are: results oriented; flexible thinking; decisiveness; relationship building; making an impact; and personal and professional development. A successful career in one demands experience of and exposure to the others. Opting for a particular group will give you a clear framework for your career development.

The starting salary for 2008 is between £25,000 - £27,000 with excellent career development and opportunities.

CASE STUDIES FROM THIS EMPLOYER

Sachin Shah

Sachin Shah - Civil Service Fast Stream Programme

I am based in the Home Office. As part of the programme I undertake a series of posts of around a year in length each. I am currently on my second post, which is as Team Leader and Workflow Manager for a team working on clearing the backlog of asylum cases. I line manage 11 caseworkers and plan their work so that they can meet some very challenging team performance targets.

Chantelle Fields - Summer Development Programme - Civil Service

Prior to hearing about the Summer Development Programme (SDP), I had no intention of pursuing a career in the Civil Service. I was first told about the scheme during my final year, by a friend at University who was thinking of applying.
