Graduate Case Studies - Paul Hansford - Software Engineer - RM

Paul-Hansford---RM

Name: Paul Hansford
Age: 23
Degree/University: Computer Science/Durham
Year of graduation: 2005
Occupation: Software Engineer in the Network Development Department, RM

What do you do in your job?
I design software solutions to make it easier to manage networks within a school environment. My day-to-day work changes regularly. At the moment I am compiling information for a particular project but my role involves anything from writing software code, designing the software and then ensuring everyone is happy with the final solution.

What was your motivation in applying?
There are a lot of teachers in my family so I was aware of the RM brand, plus I remembered using their computers at school, but I wasn't sure about the extent of what RM did. I found a leaflet in the careers advice bureau at university, which told me about everything else that RM do, and then applied.

What do you enjoy about your job?
I enjoy the diversity. I never do the same thing twice because no two projects are the same. We are always dealing with new problems, and constantly working with new software and hardware. We also have to make sure that all RM software is compatible with Microsoft so that when their new products are implemented into a school, they work alongside RM's properly. A big bonus therefore means that we've been experimenting with new Microsoft products long before they hit the shops. Another major part of the job that I enjoy is the people. I don't think I've ever seen an RM employee who isn't smiling for one reason or another, and everyone is always willing to help you out. It's a very supportive environment and everyone, including your team leaders and other managers, is extremely approachable. RM also holds monthly meetings that let everyone know what is going on in the business as a whole. This makes us aware of where the company stands and what goals they are achieving. I like the fact we are kept so informed generally and also more specifically about where our individual role is in the bigger company picture.

Advice to readers considering a career in your field?
Go for a job based on the employer. In my experience, most IT jobs end up being the same, but if you can find an employer that makes you happy, then it makes a job so much more enjoyable. RM recruits you as a person, not just for your technical skills. If, as a person you will fit in, they'll find or make a role for you. I like RM because they offer lots of training, if there's a course you would like to go on, they will try their best to get you on it, and that level of personal development support isn't to be found everywhere. Make sure you find a company that is right for you.
