Graduate News - Badly Written CVs Spell Disaster for Graduates
Graduate job-hunters are falling at the first hurdle due to shoddy CVs, according to Just IT Recruitment. Bad spelling and punctuation in CVs and covering letters are keeping graduates from their dream jobs, according to Just IT's recent six-week survey.
Sunil Duggal of Just IT said: "On average, almost a third of job-hunting graduates who approach us will be rejected simply for their poor grasp of language." Other significant errors include generic template CVs, missing contact details and inaccessible password-protected applications.
The study also reveals some extreme examples of CV failures, from inappropriate photographs and explicit email addresses to the inclusion of the applicant's bank details. One candidate ended the covering letter with 'Jesus loves you', while another said that their ambition was to become a hacker.
Duggal said that universities must take responsibility for teaching graduates the basics of job applications as well as their degree subject.
