Graduate Advice - Less than Satisfactory: UK schools and colleges
Ofsted (who inspect schools in the UK) just released their annual report, and it shows that nearly 800 schools and colleges, or 14% of those in the UK, are failing to improve. These are the institutions that have been judged as 'satisfactory' more than once with little proof they have room to improve.
The report said (p8):
... the quality of teaching in our schools is still too variable: too much is satisfactory and too little outstanding teaching was seen in the schools inspected this year. Satisfactory teaching does not deliver good enough progress for pupils in the most challenging circumstances.
The most worrying point, and perhaps not the most surprising, is that the schools that are not improving are the schools serving the poorest children in the UK. In fact, Ofsted said schools in poorer areas are four times more likely to be judged inadequate by inspectors than the ones serving children from the wealthiest homes.
But how do Ofsted measure success? Our education system is renowned for its focus on numbers - exam results and grades. However Ofsted also judge schools in many other ways, such as by their pupils' behaviour, the management of the institution, and the effectiveness of guidance and support for pupils.
So if the inspection does take into account more than just the grades, what can these failures be blamed on? Young people from poor backgrounds need all the support they can get to succeed, but this report is just one of many pieces of evidence saying this isn't happening.
