Graduate Advice - Getting Help from the Professionals
Recently PUSH asked its viewers if they knew what a professional body was. While 40% recognised it as a way to get into a career, 22% said they didn't know, 21% said they are only for people already in a job and 17% chose 'a well-paid limb'!
It seems that the professional bodies still have some way to go in showing how useful they can be in helping people start out in their new career paths.
TotalProfessions.com links students to the professions - telling them about what each sector is like, what job roles and salaries are on offer as well as other inside info.
Membership with a professional body can be something an employer requires or looks for, it can be a path to becoming chartered, but it can also be something you do to get help starting out. Most professional bodies have a student membership category, usually at a hugely reduced rate.
Once joined you will be able to take advantage of the full range of services your professional body offers its student members. Some of these may be accessible without joining too. What benefits you might take the form of a journal or newsletter keeping you up to date with the latest in the field. Or perhaps it's the events and conferences where you can meet peers and potential employers that most interests you.
However there's more. Being part of a professional body shows your commitment and that you are interested in developing your career and interests. This will impress employers but it will also help you to figure out what the right path is for you. After all the whirlwind of uni will pass quicker than you might hope! So browse through UK professional bodies by sector and find the one that fits with your interests, current studies and career aspirations.
