Graduate Advice - Get Connected

social media

Social media might be the new way of doing everything. From facebook to youtube and the music industry to job hunting, the way we make connections is changing. Used properly, this means employers can see the real you like never before, but with any new technology there are new rules and it's not alwasy easy learning what they are.

Clean up your profiles

One of the advantages of social media is that anyone can see it, the downside of that is that anyone can see it. You spread your net wide and might get noticed by recruiters you've never approached on sites like LinkedIn but if your account links to a facebook profile with photos of you on a stag weekend in Amsterdam, then your future employers will judge you based on that. Remember that if you put something online, anyone can see it.

Link up your profiles

Now they're clean, link your profiles. Different accounts offer different benefits and there's no point in following recruiters on twitter if you don't have an account somewhere else giving details about you and maybe even showing off your work.

Get tweeting

Twitter lets other people overhear your conversations, so make sure they're good ones. If you're active, employers are likely to see your account and you want it to say something good about you. Make sure you're following key people in your chosen industry, tweet and retweet knowledgably about relevant subjects and know when to say nothing.

LinkedIn

A recent survey showed 36% of companies think profiles will eventually replace CVs. If that happens, LinkedIn is the frontrunner for where those profiles will be. So treat it like a CV, only put details of relevant jobs, be seen to be professional and proactive (comment in discussion and on messageboards) and don't link up with just anyone, take some time to craft your profile. Like a CV, LinkedIn also gives the chance for previous employers to reference you, so look up those work experience bosses and get them to.

Blogging

It's not just about social networking sites like facebook and twitter, other social media can help your job hunt too. Blogging is a great way to show off your talents to potential employers. After all, already doing the job in your free time is a great way of showing you're suited to being paid for it.
