Graduate Case Studies - CIARAN PRICE-TRAINEE SOLICITOR
Looking back on it now, I was pretty nervous on my first day. I felt like the 'new guy' and was pretty unsure about even writing a covering letter. But the support you get from everyone and the work you're given means that you gain confidence really quickly. The feedback you get is constructive and positive so that every piece of work you do feels like you're progressing, and by the end of my first seat I was doing work similar to that of a newly qualified solicitor.
Being in the work place is obviously going to be more pressured, with clients having very real deadlines and expectations. Learning how to manage clients is a big part of the job now. You also learn the meaning of that strange phrase 'commercial awareness' pretty quickly; clients are interested far more in costs and speed of work than in legal niceties.
For me, the greatest upside is the great range of work and great clients, and the chance to see something you've worked on make it into the papers from time to time. The downside is that the hours can be long, and, of course, there are going to be tasks that are less interesting than others. But I think it would be fair to say that even if you're putting together a trial bundle for half a day, you're aware of what it's for and why it's necessary and that makes it much more bearable.
The best advice I could give would be to get any kind of work experience that you can; even half a day in a high street firm can go on the CV. Anything that can demonstrate you have an understanding of the real job will go a long way.
