Having studied law at undergraduate level at Cardiff University, it was a natural progression for me to study the LPC at Cardiff Law School. I had lived in Cardiff for the previous three years and loved the cosmopolitan city; being large enough to remain anonymous, yet small enough to make a close group of new friends. I was also attracted to the LPC at Cardiff Law School due to its excellent reputation and my knowledge of the supportive staff members. I had spoken to various law firms about their preferred choice of institution for the LPC and the majority of them approved of Cardiff Law School (the remainder of which required their trainees to study the LPC at a specified institution).
Initially I found the course daunting, with rumours of heavy workloads and demanding deadlines; however, when I actually started it, although the first month was heavy and demanding, I found it interesting to finally understand the real role that a lawyer plays in the legal world today. I did not find the LPC too academically challenging, it was just the volume of work that could be hard to balance with social activities if I did not manage my time efficiently. I soon settled into the daily working routine and found myself often able to socialise and having evenings off to unwind from a busy day at Law School. All of the staff members that I interacted with were both professional and friendly, and would make themselves available for you if you had any problems or queries, which is always helpful when learning about a new area of law for the first time.
Now that I have completed the LPC, I realise that it was much more enjoyable than my law degree was to study and I feel ready to make strong applications for a Training Contract. I am currently living in London and am about to commence employment with Rosling King LLP as a paralegal in their litigation department. I plan to keep working in the legal field until I find a suitable Training Contract in the commercial world.
With hindsight, I would advise any students contemplating studying the LPC to apply for Training Contracts from their second year so that the course can be funded by a law firm, because coming out of Law School with extra debt is not ideal! Having said that, however, I do not regret studying the LPC pre-Training Contract, and have in fact found my experiences from the LPC helpful when deciding which firms to make applications to.
