Graduate News - Realworld graduate of the year wins Square Mile's Young City Lawyer award

Alan Mak

Realworld graduate of the year 2005 Alan Mak has continued his inexorable rise to the top by being recognized as Young City Lawyer of the year in Square Mile magazine's 30 under 30 awards. Alan received the converted award at a black tie event in the Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, on Friday 26th of March 2010 in front of a room of the City's finest.

The Awards celebrate London's top 30 young achievers, and recognise the ambition, achievement, potential and the success of London's future leaders. They are the most coveted awards recognising young talent in the City. Over 1000 nominations were made by Square Mile readers across 8 categories - Entrepreneurship; Finance; Law; Media & Entertainment; Politics; Social Enterprise; Sport; and Technology- before the judges whittled these down to the final 30. These 30 received their awards from Will Greenwood MBE (England rugby hero and ex-HSBC trader) - the event's master of ceremonies - whilst Julie Meyer (a dragon on BBC Online's Dragons' Den and CEO of Ariadne Capital) was the event's keynote speaker.

Awards in the law category were presented to those who stand out as beacons of excellence in the highly driven and highly competitive world of London law firms. Alan Mak, 26, a corporate finance lawyer from Clifford Chance LLP, was the overall winner of the "law" category and named Young City Lawyer of the City.

The judges praised Alan's "involvement in high-profile client work and the use of his exceptional talents to help others", including serving as a local primary school governor, working with client Morgan Stanley to launch a breakfast club programme for underprivileged children across Tower Hamlets, and securing funding for literacy charity Room to Read to build children's libraries in Asia.

Tim Slee, managing director of Square Up Media, publishers of Square Mile magazine, commented: "The 30 Under 30 Awards are a superb way to acknowledge the first-class talent we have in London. The capital has had a tough time of late; so we thought it was time to remind everybody what - or more accurately, who - makes this city so great."

Alan Mak, commented: "I'm delighted to have won this year's Square Mile Award and to be recognised for my work in the City. Being part of the Real World community
and your Graduate of the Year competition gave me a great platform to transition from university life into the professional world. I'm grateful to everyone at Real World for their inspiration, support and encouragement."
