Graduate Case Studies - Sarah Louise Winter - Business Development Consultant - PEER1 Hosting

Sarah Louise Winter

Name: Sarah Louise Winter
Age:23
Degree and university: Modern Foreign Languages, University of Southampton
Job title: Business Development Consultant

What do you actually do?

My role here at PEER 1 Hosting is of the sales nature, with an emphasis on our existing customer base. I proactively sell our products to existing customers in order to improve their existing solution as well as reactively sell products. They come to me with an issue or an enquiry and I will use our extensive resources (both human and technological) in order to upgrade their solution and rectify the issue.

What skills do you need to do that?

You need to be keen and hardworking, with an ability to communicate well.

How did you know you wanted a career in technology?

In all honesty my original career aspiration was simply to be working in the sales industry.  However, I do have an interest in the IT arena, as it is one that constantly evolves and that’s what keeps the job interesting and exciting.  What we sell is more than a product it is a service and that is something I have always been keen on.

What would you like to be doing in ten years time?

In ten years’ time, I would like to be working in the same arena but as an International Sales Manager/Director.

What’s the best thing about your job?

In terms of the actual job role it has to be that no day is the same, and I am always learning something new, which keeps it interesting.  In terms of where I work, well that almost goes without saying.  They provide us with drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), fresh fruit every day, breakfast, a miniature golf course, a darts board, a Nintendo Wii...need  I go on...the point is we are really looked after here and coming to work is never a chore.

And the worst?

There isn’t really “a worst thing”.  The only negative I can think of, and that is temporary is that being new here means I have a lot to learn and quite often I am trying to run before I can walk....but that said there is ample support there for those complicated moments!

What advice would you give new graduates who want a career in IT?

It depends on the role that they want.  If it’s a role like mine all you need to be is interested and extremely driven.  I.T isn’t for everyone; you need to be the kind of person who is happy to be learning and self teaching all the time.  It’s not boring like everyone would assume, in fact I would go so far as to say it is exciting, and with the right company it can be a very fruitful career path.  I.T is forever evolving, which means there will never be a shortage of jobs!
