Graduate Case Studies - Gareth Evans - Cardiff Law School - Former student

Gareth Evans

Name: Gareth Evans

University: Cardiff Law School BPTC

Job: Currently in pupillage in 9 Park Place, Cardiff

The Learning Environment

The BPTC is a marked change from undergraduate studies; it is the transition from study to practice and this is reflected in the demands it makes upon its students. The Cardiff BPTC tutors provide a readily-accessible support base to students and are always willing to offer their time and experience. The small number of students on the course at Cardiff engenders a camaraderie amongst the students that really helps you get through a demanding year. The dedicated Legal Practice Library is well stocked with all you need for the course and beyond; in fact, I have been back whilst in pupillage to use some of the hard-to-find texts.

Preparing for Practice

The BPTC at Cardiff prepares students for the rigours of independent practice and pupillage. It requires students to be self-disciplined, organised and focussed on advocacy. The time spent on practical advocacy is unrivalled from the other providers, something which is readily apparent when training with students from other providers at Inns of Court sessions. The variety of subjects offered during the final, self-selected term provided me with specific, focussed training for the areas of practice I hope to work in.

Placements

I found the two placement weeks with local practitioners to be hugely beneficial, both to my studies and my later applications for pupillage. They really helped to put all the classroom training into context and reinforced my confidence in my own burgeoning legal knowledge.

Mock Trials

The BPTC at Cardiff culminates in full mock trials in civil and criminal law. They draw together all the skills developed through the year and give students a real taste of what awaits them in county and magistrates' courts across England and Wales. I also represented Cardiff at an inter-provider mock trial competition, gaining valuable advocacy experience and affording me the opportunity of competing against the best of my peers.
