Graduate Advice - Routes Into Social Work

social work

Routes into Social Work:

Degree: To be a fully fledged social worker, you need an honours degree in social work. Employers will quite often provide funding for these degrees, which makes them great for social work assistants who want to progress. If not, there is a bursary available to every UK student.

Access course: For those who don't meet the entry requirements or have been out of education long enough to feel a bit rusty, a number of colleges offer access courses in social work.

Postgraduates: Already got a degree? Some universities offer conversion Masters that are shorter than the full social work degree. Entry can depend on the subject and class of degree.

The Open University run a distance learning programme. This is only for employees already working in social care and it requires some support from an employer. Ask around, some might be willing to train new employees.

Trainee Schemes: Local councils, charities and some voluntary organisations run trainee schemes. These usually trade work experience and help with tuition fees for a smaller paypacket. Some employers ask that you commit to working for them for a period of time after getting your degree.
