Graduate Advice - Who's Hiring?
Who's Hiring?
Your guide to who has jobs, who wants interns and who needs trainees.
Accountancy
Having been open from September last year most accountancy firms have filled all the
graduate spaces. The exceptions are KPMG, who have a handful of audit, tax and advisory roles on offer, Ernst & Young and PricewaterhouseCoopers, both of whom still
have places on six week summer internships.
Actuarial
Quieter than a gagged mime at the moment, the big actuarial-recruiting rush is in September.
Banking & Finance
It isn't their liveliest time of the year, but there is some action happening in the banking sector. Schneider (STA) and the Kiln Group are taking on applicants for its full-time, unpaid graduate trainee schemes. Royal Bank of Scotland, Citi and Nationwide are among the more high street names recruiting graduates.
Built Environment
Have a CV to hand because this sector is hungry for graduates. ARUP have a variety of graduate roles, Nuclear Graduates are currently accepting applications for placements and training schemes and Carillion have a small number of paid graduate internships. Atkins is still employing graduates country-wide, particularly in the South East.
Consultancy
Like a horror film the consultancy employers are quiet - too quiet. There are things
happening but they take some seeking out. The Arcadia Group and Vertex are looking for analysts, whilst Tier One and Hydrogen want recruitment consultants.
Engineering
Engineering graduates are generally in high demand right now. ARUP have electrical, fire and geotechnical engineering roles on offer and Atkins need specialist engineers. There is a large but rapidly dwindling supply of placements with companies like Nuclear Graduates, Corus, npower and Cummins. BP has a graduate scheme that will be open until 1st September.
Third Sector
Openings in this sector aren't plentiful but there are graduate openings at every level, from Flow Caritas and the National Skills Academy for Social Care to the National Railway Museum.
Europe
Maybe it has something to do with last month's volcanic dust cloud, but there is very little
graduate employment in Europe. Throwing this trend to the wind are EuroLondon, who
have an ongoing recruitment scheme and Tesco who have a Europe-wide graduate recruitment programme, offering placements from Ireland to the Czech Republic.
FMCG
Very little is happening in this industry, other than a few ongoing recruitment drives. Nestle are currently taking on apprentices. They are also accepting applications for
graduate positions across their many departments (which includes veterinary nurses).
Unilever have summer placements and yearlong industrial placements, offering positions in financial management and supply chain.
IT and Technology
Although enjoying a mini boom in the South of England, the IT and technology front is
quiet at the moment, DSTL are one of the few companies employing. Accenture is recruiting for a graduate technology training scheme and BAE have graduate and undergraduate programmes.
Further Study
Applications are open for most higher education institutions, with closing dates for Masters programmes usually at the end of May. Some institutions, like the ESCP European Business School, have rolling uptakes because of differing term dates. Cardiff Law School has two more application dates this year: 1st July and 1st October.
Gap Year
Applications for gap year programmes abroad are mostly closed now, although a few companies are accepting applicants for next summer. Travelworks have a number of paid and volunteering positions open to graduates. Community Service Volunteers wants volunteers for a range of projects. They also have a few paid roles in managerial and human resources positions.
Law
With the exception of a few individual chambers in London, this sector is in hibernation.
Logistics & Transport
A varied smorgasbord of graduate opportunities: Rolls Royce have a number of graduate schemes open until the end of May, as well as an ongoing uptake of interns, as do C Spencer Ltd. Rail companies Tfl, Network Rail and Tube Lines all have ongoing recruitment for either specialist training projects or, in the case of Network Rail, a funded MSc in project management.
Management
From supermarkets to Scottish hospitals, managers are wanted everywhere. Vacancies in retail include Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury and Tesco. The CIPD and the ICSA are both running graduate training programmes, whilst the Hilton hotel group is accepting applicants for its fast-track programmes. Other graduate positions are available across the public and private sectors, including The Meltwater Group, NHS Scotland, IBM and Abercrombie and Fitch.
Marketing & PR
It's getting to the end of the recruiting season in this sector. This means a handful of positions are still available. Tesco, Mason Blake, Wave Matrix and the Meltwater Group each have a few openings. Fidelity has a scheme for analysts and graduate associates which rotates its applicants around departments internally. Nestle have a rolling graduate recruitment programme which is taking on marketing and PR roles.
Media & Creative Industries
September is the start of the graduate uptake for the creative and media industries. The available positions are mostly in event management and conference production, with no call for broadcasters or journalists. UCA has opened their books for paid graduate internships, starting in September.
Prof essional Bodies
The financial sector is best represented by their professional bodies at this time of the year, with CIPFA, CIPS GPA and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland all recruiting. CIPD and the ICSA are both running training graduate programmes in management and human resources, whilst the Institute of Civil Engineers have vacancies
nationwide.
Public Sector
The Army, RAF and Navy have rolling recruitment programmes whilst NHS Scotland has
management and human resources positions available for a limited time only.
Recruitment
Trainee recruitment consultant is the position of the moment, with MatchTech and
Yellow Cat recruiting. Modis' trainee consultant scheme in Bristol is also open. Robert Half have openings for financial people of all descriptions.
Retail
The retail sector always recruits heavily for the summer and is doing so now. The big high street stores all have specific graduate schemes, including the larger supermarkets, Next, BHS and Boots, among others. Amazon is looking for graduate buyers.
Sales
Not much is happening in this industry. Enterprise and Cummins have some graduate vacancies, the latter are in Northamptonshire.
Science
The science, research and development sectors will be recruiting for graduates from now until September. Recognizable names GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson Matthey, Akzonobel, GE. BP are recruiting until 1st September for a graduate scheme in engineering and science.
Social Work
There's not much on offer but the Department of Health is running a campaign to get more people interested in social work careers.
Teaching
There will always be demand for English teachers abroad. The British Council has vacancies for TEFL qualified teachers, teaching English as well as business and management courses everywhere from Ukraine to Kuwait. Explore Learning has part-time tutor roles and full time assistant director roles, both for graduates.
