Graduate Case Studies - Rowena Jones - Graduate Management trainee in Adult Social Care - National Skills Academy
Name: Rowena Jones
Job: Graduate Management Trainee in Adult Social Care
What do you actually do?
I am currently on a year-long graduate management trainee scheme in adult social care, run by the National Skills Academy. During the twelve months I am based within a host organisation in order to gain first hand experience of leadership and management within the social care sector, I am also currently studying for a management qualification. The host organisation that I
am based with is the Beth Johnson Foundation in Stoke on Trent. The Beth Johnson Foundation is a charity that aims to improve the quality of life for older people, through innovative and developmental projects. During my time at the foundation I have done a number of different tasks to build on and improve my management and leadership skills. Currently I am leading on implementing a quality assurance system within the organisation. Alongside the experience gained within my host organisation, I have also done a number of smaller placements to build upon my knowledge and skills, and to experience different parts of the sector.
Why did you decide to go into this sector?
Social care is a really important and rewarding career, my interest in working within the sector began whilst I was still at university, this interest developed through topics and areas covered within Sociology, with a particular emphasis on older people and policy. Furthermore, social care is currently changing and to me this is a really exciting time to join the social care sector, and to have the opportunity to be involved in shaping and implementing these changes.
How did you find out about your particular course?
The graduate scheme was advertised on prospects.co.uk.
Would you undertake further training to further your career?
Yes certainly, I would be willing to undertake any training that would be beneficial to my career.
What do you like most about what you do and are there any downsides?
Social care is a really important part of our society, and to be working in the social care sector, and having the ability to help individuals with the care and support they need to improve their quality of life is a really rewarding career. Furthermore, the graduate scheme is a fantastic opportunity to shape my learning and development needs to areas of social care that I find particularly interesting.
What do you think are the most important skills/strengths you need to make a success of what you do?
I think it is important to be caring and considerate, and treat everybody with respect and dignity. Good communication and organisational skills are also important.
What advice would you give graduates wishing to come into this sector?
I would certainly advise graduates to join the social care sector if they are passionate about making a real difference to people's lives. The social care sector offers a variety of different roles that graduates could join, with some excellent career prospects.
