Graduate Case Studies - Carla Teteris - Legal Practice in Australia - City University, London

Carla

Name: Carla Teteris

Degrees: Criminal Litigation LLM, City University London, Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice in Australia.

The qualification at City is the first postgraduate degree in the UK to be devoted exclusively to criminal litigation.

Why did you decide to do postgraduate study?

After completing my studies in Australia in 2007, I took a year off to experience working and living in London, a vibrant and culturally rich city, and to enjoy a summer holiday in Italy. During this year I
realised that I enjoyed and missed learning, so decided to continue my studies with a specialised masters.

How did you fund your postgraduate study?

I am funding my own studies, and believe studying a postgraduate course shows dedication and a desire for specialist knowledge, which I think will help me with my career.

How does postgraduate study differ from your degree course?

Postgraduate study is different to undergraduate study because you have to be more committed as it takes up a great deal of your time. It requires self-discipline and self-motivation, so you need to be quite serious about the work. The workload is greater and the subjects are more in-depth, however the level of support from the teachers has also increased. The City Law school tutors are always
directing us to recent publications and reports in criminal law. Rather than just learning the law as it currently applies, there is an added emphasis on being responsive to the current developments and areas of reform. The structure of courses and their content is more flexible -- there are opportunities toresearch a specific topic if it interests you. I think postgrad study is extremely worthwhile
and rewarding.

Why did you choose City University to study at?

The university's great employability record and the reputation of The City Law School initially attracted me, as well as the idea of being based in London. I find studying criminal law extremely interesting, as well as the practice of it. These interests made the LLM in Criminal Litigation at City ideal. The programme enhances your understanding of the law on a theoretical, as well as practical level. This compels you to question procedures within and approaches to criminal litigation. I believethis is of great benefit to a lawyer.
