Graduate Case Studies - Chris Greggory - Audit Associate - Leeds office of Grant Thornton

Chris Greggory

Name: Chris Greggory

Degree: Accounting & Finance at University of Leeds

Job: Audit Associate in Leeds office of Grant Thornton

Why did you decide to apply to Grant Thornton?

I chose Grant Thornton because of the investment they make into the graduate scheme in terms of the training. For example Bradenham Manor is an amazing facility which has helped me to develop both technical and professional skills for my job and for the ACA qualification.

Why did you decide to go into audit?

I decided on audit because of the vast experience and range of clients you have in the department. It is fast moving, and no two days are the same.

What does your role involve?

Ultimately, the objective of the audit team is to give an impartial evaluation of the financial statements of a company, providing an objective statement of the financial accounts, ensuring that they show a true, accurate and fair view of a company. The main responsibilities on a daily basis are to help complete the objectives of the audit, making sure I meet the work and time demands so that the audit team can come to a fair conclusion. I am currently studying towards the ACA qualification, which is
challenging, but the college and the firm provide a supportive training environment.

How have you found the training?

I have already completed internal courses at the dedicated training centre, building knowledge
in accounting, internal systems, and specific audit knowledge. It is important to have a good work/life
balance and I find that it can be difficult to work and study at the same time, but it is
easier to do if you just do an hour or two of work as soon as you get home. Auditing means you might have to travel and stay over but this gives you ideal time to complete
some studying.

Career highlight so far?

The biggest challenge I have faced so far is completing an assignment with a very strict deadline
from the client. This meant I had to plan effectively to make sure all the work that was needed to be done was completed on time. The biggest highlight is the audit team completing work that impresses the client.
