Graduate Case Studies - James Long - Analyst, Transaction Advisory Services - Ernst & Young LLP

James Long

Name: James Long
Degree and University: Economics, University of Birmingham
Job: Analyst, Transaction Advisory Services, Ernst & Young LLP

What do you actually do?

I work within the restructuring department at Ernst & Young.
My day-to-day responsibilities include responding to correspondence from creditors, data analysis, and statutory duties such as preparing VAT returns and time cost evaluations.

Why did you decide to go into the financial sector?

I was given my first taster of the financial sector during a week's work experience placement at the age of 16 and was then offered the chance of a summer job. After reading economics at university, it
seemed quite a logical move to look for jobs within the financial sector. During my second year I successfully applied for an internship at Ernst and Young, which then led to a
graduate placement.

How did you find out about your particular course?

I found out about Ernst & Young's graduate scheme through the internet. I knew of the 'big four' professional services firms so it was just a case of researching them and their open vacancies. I chose Ernst & Young because I had heard that it was one of the better firms to work for in terms of its investment in staff development. This was immediately confirmed to me when I took part in the summer internship programme, and during my interview for the graduate scheme.

Would you undertake further training to
further your career?

Yes, for my department it is definitely expected that employees will partake in some further training after university - be it internal training or an external qualification.

What do you like most about you do and are there any downsides?

One of the best things about working for Ernst & Young is the people you get an opportunity to work with. There are also lots of career development opportunities that come from working for multinational firm.

What do you think are the most important skills/strengths you need to make a success of what you do?

It is important to be enthusiastic, but I would also recommend attending networking events. They help you to develop strong professional relationships both within and outside the office.

What advice would you give graduates wishing to come into this sector?

Be prepared when going to interviews. Make sure you thoroughly research the company, the services they offer, and any related news stories regarding their firm/profession.
