Graduate Case Studies - Ellie - Consultant - Detica

detica

Age: 23

Degree and university: University of Plymouth, Criminal Justice Studies with Psychology

Work title: Consultant

What do you actually do? I’m a business consultant for the government sector. Since joining Detica last year, I’ve worked on business change for two government clients.

Were you always interested in IT as a career? Not at all – Detica appealed to me because of the client base and the business consultancy aspect of the work. I have a very non-technical background, which I was initially worried would stand in my way at Detica. However, from working closely with the developers, I’ve picked up detail about how systems work and the factors involved in developing them as I go.

What do you most like about what you do and are there any downsides? What I like most about my job is that I get to work with a huge variety of people – within the company and across clients. Building this network is important to me, as it means I have a wide range of people to call on when needed, and equally to help them when I can. Consultancy means doing different work as required by the client, so what I work on one month will lead to something new the month after. Doing the same job day after day doesn’t appeal at all, so the challenge and variety of consultancy really suits me.

Sometimes I’m given tasks that I wouldn’t have chosen, as there isn’t anyone more appropriate to do it. This can be challenging, but project managers are pretty fair – if you help them out and do the best you can, they’ll try and make sure your next piece of work is more suited to you.

What skills do you need to succeed? The ability to see things from multiple points of view and to think creatively around a problem are the most important qualities. It’s also necessary to be flexible, and willing to do the best you can at all times – especially as you may often be working on something that you haven’t done before.

What advice would you give other graduates? Think about the clients you might want to work for – helping organisations to change when you believe whole-heartedly in what they are trying to achieve is a really worthwhile feeling.
