Graduate Case Studies - Elroy - IT Consultant - Detica

Detica

Age: 23

Degree and university: University of Kent, Computer Science BSc

Work title: IT Consultant, Detica

What do you actually do? I am an IT consultant working in the commercial sector. I have consulted several companies on a variety of technologies in a number of industries.

Were you always interested in IT as a career? I have always been interested in how things work, especially computers, and knew I wanted to work with them in future. Technology fascinated me. For example, it amazed me how you could send an email from a machine in one location and it would arrive almost instantly on another machine in another location on the other side of the world. It still amazes me!

What do you most like about what you do and are there any downsides?I could think of nothing worse than doing a job where I was doing the same thing again and again and again….Luckily I get a lot of variety. I get to work on different projects with different people and learn new things. It can be a challenge but I really enjoy it.

One of the downsides with consultancy is that you have to work wherever the client is. So travel or staying in hotels can be involved. But it is also good experience and you can work in some good locations (and some bad ones!)

What skills do you think you need to succeed? I think one of the key skills to being an IT consultant is being adaptable. You generally do not have much notice on what you are going to be working on with a new project. This could be a technology or system you have never seen before. So you have got to be able to pick something up quickly and get on with it.

What advice would you give other graduates coming into this sector? If you want to be challenged, work with clients and get variety, then consulting might the right option for you.
