Why did you decide to study a postgraduate degree in diversity management?
When I started my course I had been a freelance training consultant for about seven years, working on behalf of several consultancy firms delivering management and communication skills courses. One of the reasons for doing the Diversity Management course was that the work was beginning to dry up and what there was of it was becoming repetitive and unsatisfying. Diversity Management is an emerging concept in the world of Human Resource Management and I wanted to become familiar with some cutting edge information and research. I thought going back to university would give me some inspiration as well as add something to my CV.
What do you do now? I am currently working as Lead Learning and Development Consultant for FMG Support in Huddersfield. I think the experience andskills gained through the course have helped broaden my horizons and my marketability in an emerging area. It has certainly given me the confidence to widen my current career choices. After completing the programme I had a couple of interviews lined up, one of which would not have been possible without obtaining my MA.
How did you find postgraduate study? As a mature student with family responsibilities I had to make the most of every minute so being able to access journals from home was brilliant, as it meant that I wasted less time commuting to look for reference materials. Having worked previously I was also able to make use of contacts to collate information for my final dissertation on the legal sector. I suspect my previous experience and career pattern had helped hone the skills of research and critical analysis. I tend to be very focused and just got on with my work while the children were at school, studying everywhere I could, including in the car at riding lessons, at swimming lessons, or waiting outside the school gates. It might sound very committed but it did not feel that onerous at the time!
What was the best part of your studies? The opportunity to apply new information and concepts to my existing business experience was very rewarding. I think studying gave me the confidence to get back out there, as I was using my brain in a different way and previously I had relied very much on past knowledge and experience.
