Graduate Case Studies - Edward Kigonya -- Financial Institutions Regulator -- Bank Of Uganda

Edward

Degree and University: MA Economics and Finance, Leeds University Business School

Work Title: Financial Institutions Regulator at the Bank of Uganda

Why did you decide to study a postgraduate degree? I was attracted to the MA Economics and Finance as I wanted to gain a better understanding of advanced financial systems and developments, improve my understanding of economic and finance theories relevant to economic and financial decision-making, as well as understand and appreciate the interrelationship between the real and financial sectors of the economy.

I wanted to develop the conceptual and analytical skills required to help progress my career in the public service, and also gain exposure to advanced business concepts, knowledge, and skills, which have a practical application in the workplace.

I was interested in the whole experience of studying at Leeds University Business School, especially the co-operative and participatory approaches to learning and the opportunity to share ideas and experiences with students from a range of countries. The University also places a great emphasis on practical careers advice and support which is very important. I also read that Leeds is one of the top ten universities for research in the UK and the Business School itself was rated excellent for learning and teaching.

What do you do now? I am currently working as a Financial Institutions Regulator with the Bank of Uganda and my remit broadly deals with the supervision of financial institutions.

Have your career aspirations expanded since your studies? Greatly. I have certainly advanced in terms of moving up the career ladder. I have since received three promotions in the four years that I have been back and my confidence has been boosted greatly. I have also looked at moving from my current career and a few interviews that I have attended showed me that I can positively move in that direction.

The experience and skills I gained from my studies have helped in my career and will continue to do so.  The Leeds experience gave me a world class qualification, exposure to advanced financial systems, a shared experience with students from diverse places, cultures and backgrounds; all of which have helped me and will continue to help me advance in my career and to fit in properly wherever I may go.

What was the best part of your postgraduate experience? The experience of studying at Leeds, especially the co-operative and participatory approaches to learning and the opportunity to share ideas and experiences with students from a range of countries, as well as the University’s emphasis on not only teaching but also practical careers advice and support. The defining memories of my experience were the friendships I made and increased confidence in my abilities; there is not one particular event as so many events will always be remembered and treasured.
