Graduate News - Manufacturing Moving Up
Green roots may be sprouting after all. For the first time in over a year the UK's manufacturing industry showed signs of life, increasing output by .02 per cent from March to April -- after a revision in the data from March -- according to numbers just released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). While the number may be small, it is a positive not to be dismissed by one of the sectors hit the hardest in the economic downturn. The growth is the first seen in the sector since February 2008.
The most significant increases within the manufacturing sector were found in the transport equipment industry, which saw a 3.2 per cent increase in output between March and April. The chemical and man-made fibres industry and the paper, printing, and publishing industries also saw substantial increases in output totalling 2.3 per cent and 1.6 per cent respectively, according to the ONS.
