Graduate News - Embracing the Blues

smurf main

As children, we all knew the Smurfs -- forest dwelling blue gnomes clad in white trousers and hats. Turning out either to relive the fantasies of childhood or merely to set a new world record, 2,510 Smurf impersonators gathered at Swansea University in the early morning hours of June 9th. At 1 A.M., after all those attending were examined to ensure that they were sufficiently blue, Guinness confirmed that the gathering shattered the previous record of 1,253 recorded at Castleblayney last year.

James Houston, Student Union President at Swansea University, said the event was the cap to a great year. 'We achieved what we set out to and set the world record!' he said with enthusiasm.

With all the gloom and doom that seems to be recycling non-stop in the media during these times of economic slowdown, Houston said the event was a bright spot. 'It's been a light-hearted bit of fun,' he said.

Orchestrated in concert with UK fancy dress costume seller Jokers' Masquerade, which provided the costumes to students, the spectacular gathering of blue bodies was the culmination of 18 months of jostling for the world record. Last year, an attempt was made at Swansea for the record, but according to Houston it was "haphazard." This year, however, with the help of Jokers' Masquerade, the event went off without a hitch.

'When you're offering students a full Smurf outfit, they get quite excited,' Houston said. 'I just think it's a real credit to the students who were there last night. What a thing to do while at Uni.'

Rebecca Oatley of Jokers' Masquerade was similarly passionate about the event. 'Smurf Guinness World Record holder has become an illustrious title,' she said. 'We knew that if we were going to break the record, we had to do it in style and 2,510 Smurfs will be a tough act to follow for any budding record breakers.'
