Graduate Case Studies - Noel McAuliffe - Accountant - Brighton & Hove County Council

Noel McAulffie main

Age: 35
Degree and University: Senior Status Law Degree with the Open University Business School - completed in under two years [completed in December 2006]
Work title: Accountant for Brighton & Hove County Council on project relating to equal pay legislation and studying part-time for the Bar Vocational Course (BVC). Noel should qualify as a barrister this summer.

Why did you decide on a career in Law? Having spent a number of years working in finance as an accountant/financial analyst, which was largely unsatisfying, I decided that I wanted to contribute to society in a positive way and felt that this could best be achieved through a career in the legal profession.

What do you most enjoy about what you do? The equal pay project I am working on has a huge impact on a large number of poorly paid workers and will ultimately change a number of their lives for the better. This is innately rewarding and far more satisfying than any of my previous roles and is a good example of the law working for those most in need. However, I am not yet working as a barrister and the satisfaction one can get from accountancy is limited. However, I hope to get called to the bar this summer.

What skills do you think you need to succeed? Above al else you need hard work and determination and a clear view of what it is you want to achieve.

What Advice would you give to graduates wishing to pursue a carer in Law? Find out as much as possible about the profession before you embark on the training, and be absolutely certain that it is what you really want to do.

Miriam Idris - Coperate Financier - PWC

I work in the Corporate Finance part of PwC’s Advisory practice in Birmingham after having completed three years with the firm’s Audit practice in the East Midlands. The Corporate Finance work I do is all about mergers and acquisitions, primarily selling businesses. This can mean private companies being sold to other companies in the sector, or to private equity houses. My work involves understanding businesses and how they operate, what their strategic direction is, their position in the market, and understanding what their growth potential is. It also involves understanding industries and how businesses are valued. ... more
