The image of students drunkenly staggering around city streets after an organised pub crawl could soon be a thing of the past if the NUS has its way.
Students in Derby, York, Liverpool, Wolverhampton and London have all called for a campaign to promote 'responsible drinking', and state the inaccurate portrayal of all students being binge drinkers needs to be addressed. 'The notion of the stereotypical image of the student sitting and drinking in the bar has gone,' says President of the NUS, Gemma Tumelty. To this end, the Liverpool Guild of Students has made the decision to stop the promotion of cheap alcohol, while many Student Unions would like to see more images of students doing positive things, such as putting on cultural events, rather than drinking to excess.
