The £10 Million Gap Year
Are gap years the preserve of wealthy students? Not any more. A new global volunteering scheme will give young adults from less advantaged backgrounds the chance to work in some of the world’s poorest communities.
The £10 million government-backed scheme, Platform2, will sponsor 2,500 young adults over the next three years to carry out voluntary work abroad. This year’s intake of 18 – 25-year-olds are due to spend ten weeks in Ghana or South Africa.
Douglas Alexander, International Development Secretary, said: ‘This scheme aims to give young British adults who wouldn’t normally have an opportunity the chance to make a valuable contribution to the lives of people overseas who are blighted by poverty.’
Platform2 is run in partnership with BUNAC, Christian Aid and Islamic Relief. Callum Kennedy, Director of BUNAC said: ‘Volunteering in a developing country shouldn't be the preserve only of those who can, literally, afford to give up their time to do it.’
Platform2 is open to young adults from less advantaged backgrounds aged 18-25 on the date of travel who meet a combination of criteria relating to previous education, employment, benefits and travel. Positive emphasis will be placed on a track record of community involvement. All volunteers must hold (or be eligible for) a British passport.
