Financial Times, Tues May 1, Graduate Recruitment
'A new tool for fishing: the graduate recruitment landscape is changing'
John Boone

Only 15.4 per cent of students thought it would be difficult to find a career after graduation. Interest in the Big 4 accountancy firms remains strong, as does the continued popularity of public sector organisations.

Darius Norell, managing director of Real World, says entrepreneurship "has increased sharply in popularity" in recent years, and that "there is also a tendency for graduates to want to work in start-up companies even if they don't want to start up their own businesses themselves".

Financial Times, Tues 16 Oct 07, Special Report, Graduate Recruitment
'Less Spin, more substance, please' - Jon Boone looks at the unintended consequences of employers' focus on degree results to the exclusion of all else.

Faith in the 'good degree' as a marker of employability is unfounded and leading to a worrying waste in talent.

"There are lots of people who have 2.1s who don't cut it in a business environment, and plenty of people who don't have 2.1s who are incredibly able," says Darius Norell, head of Real World, "there is no good correlation between getting a 2.1 and being good at a job.

"People are now neglecting their extra curricular activities in order to spend every waking hour in the library, so they are not building up those extra competencies that businesses want."
