Microsoft Game Studios – Rare Limited 

Veteran UK videogame developer Rare was acquired by Microsoft Game Studios in 2002. The company has since focused on broadening the Xbox 360 audience with family-friendly titles Kameo: Elements of Power and Viva Piñata, while also bringing to bear the full weight of its Banjo-Kazooie, Conker and Perfect Dark franchises.

We’re looking for Graduate Software Engineers to join our highly talented software team, initially working as part of our Shared Technology Group, developing cutting-edge run-time game libraries and content development tools, followed by ownership of a technology component either remaining with STG or joining one of our Xbox 360 game development teams.

Duties & Responsibilities:

All Graduate Software Engineers must undertake our two week formal induction programme.

Duties begin by learning our substantial internal game engine and development tools codebase followed immediately by investigating and fixing issues listed in our product database.

After a three-month assessment period, responsibility for a technology component is assigned either within STG or on a specific Xbox 360 game development team.

The technology owned is a significant component of a major software system, e.g. real-time graphics rendering, AI, asset management, rigid-body physics, networking, etc.

All Graduate Software Engineers are expected to quickly become experts in their technology area and work closely with both individual Software Engineers and other software development teams to achieve our product goals.

Person requirements

Demonstrable interest or research in topics of Computer Graphics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Neural Networks/Machine Learning, Concurrent/Parallel Programming, Networking, Computer/Machine Vision and Physics all considered highly useful. Strong communication skills and team-working experience are vital.

Education requirements

A-Level Mathematics at grade C, or better, or equivalent.

Undergraduate degree at 2:1, or better, in numerate, technical subject, e.g. Mathematics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Physics, Engineering.

Post-graduate degree qualification highly preferred, e.g. MSc, PhD.

Must have excellent C/C++ programming skills.
Additional skills in C#/.NET, Java, HLSL, XNA, SQL, XML all highly beneficial.

We have a custom-built location deep in the English countryside (with landscaped grounds, modern on-site restaurant, dedicated R&D and IT departments, fully-equipped recording studio and much more) Situated on the Warwickshire/Leicestershire border, but easily accessible from the M42, M1, M6 and A5.
