Graduate Advice - Master of the Universe

As we become more internationally networked, gaining academic experience abroad could give you a
cutting edge over your contemporaries, especially when applying to companies who operate worldwide.
This can make an investment in a master's degree even more worthwhile, giving you the opportunity to
experience a new culture in the process. You can improve your language skills too, and make friends and
connections that you never could have otherwise. An understanding of education and training abroad
could also give insights which might help you further down the line.

This is not to say that the decision to take a master's degree abroad is an easy one, it can be very
expensive, the degrees on offer may not be as well suited to you as those at home, and there may
be problems with visa regulations, work conditions and residence permits. Also, the fact is that some
people do not settle in their new location. If you cannot feel comfortable somewhere then it becomes
very difficult to successfully study.

If, however, after plenty of research, a foreign master's degree looks right for you and if you are granted
a student visa then it could make the chances of being allowed to work in that country a lot easier too.
On the other hand, a foreign master's may be alienating to some employers back home who are less
informed on international qualifications.

In most cases, however, you can expect a foreign master's degree to be looked on very favourably by
employers; it can open up a mass of opportunities, expand your horizons, and teach you as much about
yourself as your subject of choice.
