Job Title: Graduate Trainee
it you actually do?
it you actually do?
I am a Graduate Trainee in an Insurance Company. For two years I will work in five different departments within the Company: Accounts, Compliance, MI, Claims and Underwriting. This scheme is designed to give us an overview of the company, and a feel for the kind of work they do. After two years, this scheme leads to a permanent position in either Underwriting or Claims. Throughout my two years I will also have to study towards the ACII
(Advanced Diploma in Insurance).
How did you get into your job?
I responded to an advert on the Kent University Jobshop Website, and got called for an assessment day. The following week, I got invited to a further interview with the directors. The following day I found out I got the job!
Why did you decide to go into this sector?
It was never my dream to work in the Insurance sector, nor had I ever really thought about it. As I was reaching the end of my degree, I thought it was about time to start looking for a job. The only thing I knew for sure was that I wanted to stay in England. I saw the advert for my Graduate Scheme and decided to apply.
What do you most like about what you do and are
there any downsides?
I chose this scheme because it gave me the opportunity to see the different sides of the business before I had to settle on a particular job. It is fascinating to work with so many different people, and to learn so many different things. That is the most rewarding part of this scheme. However, it is hard to keep changing. Once I start feeling comfortable in a department, and get to know my colleagues a little bit better, it is time to change.
What advice would you give to other graduates?
There is no such thing as a free lunch. Compromises will always have to be made, but there are plenty of opportunities out there.
