Considering a career in book publishing? The London Book Fair 2008, which runs from 14th – 16th April, is a great opportunity to watch the professionals in action.
Bear in mind, however, that most publishers will be far too busy to discuss career opportunities during the Fair – and CVs left at reception desks don’t always get passed on. Instead, wander round the stands to get a feel for the year’s new titles and see if you can spot any upcoming trends. Jot down the names of any publishers you haven’t encountered before, as potential sources of work experience – or, better yet, buy a copy of the Exhibitors’ Guide, a comprehensive list of attendees. There will also be plenty of events, from talks by prominent authors to seminars on the issues affecting the book industry, which will broaden your knowledge and help you stand out during job interviews.
The Society of Young Publishers will be holding a free seminar on 15th April on how to kick-start your publishing career – visit the London Book Fair 2008 website to learn more.
The Bookseller, the trade magazine for the publishing industry, will be running a careers centre throughout the Fair. Staffed by industry professionals, this is the perfect way to get expert advice.
