Graduate Legal & Law Jobs

Law - Digital Edition Preview - 2010

Law is a fascinating profession for graduates to enter, with three main routes into the sector.

The first, most popular, choice is to become a trainee solicitor. Following a period of professional study, graduates will undertake a two year training contract at a solicitors' firm, which can be anything from a one-partner high street practice, to a firm housing several thousands of solicitors.

The other common route for graduates is to become a pupil barrister, which again involves professional study, followed by a one-year pupillage with barristers' chambers.

The third route is to choose to become a legal executive - a qualifying route which has lower entry criteria and so has the advantage of enabling non-law graduates to swap to a career in law using part-time study.

Some of the graduate careers available in this sector:

Trainee solicitor I Pupil barrister I Legal executive I Government Legal Service trainee I Crown prosecutor

Chelsea - Bird & Bird LLP - Trainee solicitor

As someone who has always been interested in developments in the law and current affairs, law always seemed a natural career progression, even if the path I followed was a little unusual. I currently have just finished the first year of my part-time LPC course at MMU while also working part-time at MLP solicitors and training almost full-time for the 400 hurdles. I was ranked sixteenth in the world last year so training for this takes up a large amount of my time and involves a careful balancing process with my studying of the law. ... more

Diana - Fraser Brown Solicitors - Trainee solicitor

My job varies from file to file, from client to client. I have not spent much time in the current seat, only 3 months, however it is challenging and there is always something new to research every day. I work in the Corporate Department assisting one of the Partners and as such I have the opportunity to meet clients quite often and work on various files at different stages of the transaction. ... more

Amy Hunter - Commercial Law - Pinsent Masons

I completed various different work experience placements and decided that commercial law was the area for me. I then went down the conventional route of applying for different vacation scheme placements. I completed placements at three firms and realised that, contrary to what I had initially thought, law firms really aren't all the same. For me, Pinsent Masons had the appeal of being a firm that, though already firmly established in the legal market, had the ambition to grow and develop further. ... more
