5 Steps to Career Clarity
1
Visit your careers service. Contrary to popular belief you don't have to know what you want to do before you visit your careers service. Most will employ professionals with years of experience who can talk to you about ideas for life after graduation.
2
Take a test. A computerised guidance programme, Prospects Planner, aims to help you develop a profile of your skills and values, and your interests and motivation, matching all of that to a graduate job. For advice on using it head to your university careers service or see www.prospects.ac.uk
3
Learn what others have done with your degree. You might be surprised since almost half of all graduate vacancies are open to people from any degree discipline. To source the information find out who runs your university alumni scheme.
4
Get creative. Peter Hawkins runs the Windmills Programme. He suggests listing what you don't want to do then working backwards from that point. www.windmillsprogramme.com
5
Get some work experience. This can help you to define your likes and dislikes and narrow down your career options. Even shadowing someone for a day can spark off some useful ideas.
