The power of Twitter is the power of networking and it’s high time you got out there and capitalised on it! Once you start following the right people or accounts on twitter, it’s time to get into all the exciting action going around on Twitter by mentioning other users, re-tweeting interesting tweets and why not, engaging in weekly chats.
#FF Follow Friday!
One of the most happening networking things taking place on Twitter is the #FollowFriday. This is an amazing way to kill two (or more) birds with one stone: thank all those who interacted with you over the week and recommending to others your selection of accounts to follow. How to do it? Simply say something nice, include their Twitter ID and #FollowFriday or #ff or #FF.
Recommending people that you appreciate is a great way for others to discover new people. For that use #FF strings of IDs. Instead of posting “@Daniel Thank you for the interaction. #FF” and then tweeting again “@Janice Thank you for the RT. #FF” etc., simply create one tweet including a selection of accounts you particularly want to recommend.
Extra Hint: Why not occasionally engage them in a conversation by asking a relevant question? It is better than the eternal “Thank you” and they will be grateful, plus you leave a positive impression.
# Twitter Chats
You can also network with like-minded people, who may be conducting their own job searches on Twitter and who have useful tips to share. One of the best ways to do this is to join Twitter Chats! At the same time many events like conferences and workshops have Live Twitter Chat hashtags nowadays so it is also a handy way to keep a track of what is being said in real time from afar.
Here is a short list of chats to keep an eye on during your career hunt:
#hirefriday (all day every Friday): geared toward graduating students
#JobHuntChat (Mondays — 10:00 pm ET): great advice from professionals on job hunting
#CareerChat (Tuesdays — 1:00 pm ET): tips and hints from young professionals, young entrepreneurs and dedicated alumni
#InternChat (Tuesdays at 7 p.m. ET): for insights on internships in general and how you can utilize what you learn and experience from previous internships.
#OTaC2012: to keep an eye on the top employers in your job market
