Things may be tough on the High Street, but yesterday (July 7th) the heavyweights of the fashion retail trade were in bullish mood. Attending the Fashion Retail Academy’s Awards 2009 The Arcadia Group’s Sir Philip Green, Marks & Spencer’s Sir Stuart Rose, and Tesco’s Terry Green joked and joshed while acknowledging how hard the industry has been hit by the recession.
However, Sir Philip, who was instrumental in setting up the Academy four years ago, was keen to keep the emphasis on its success and the success of this year’s graduates, many of whom have already secured jobs in the industry.
A surprise highlight of the event was the arrival of fashion and lifestyle guru Gok Wan who embraced the winners of the Academy’s Awards in his usual warm fashion, encouraging them to ‘go girls!’
A slightly more sedate but equally cheeky Terry Green (who described Sir Stuart as having ‘balls of titanium’) added these words of advice: ‘just be the best you can be at what you do and don’t try to do everybody else’s jobs’.
Awards presented included four Outstanding Students of the Year Awards and the Fashion Retail Academy Commitment Award.
