What do you do in your job?
I am in charge of running the office, training the staff, carrying out administration for the team, and generally working with my manager to ensure we are performing well. I work on the marketing side and the administration side, as well as overseeing the office and making sure our customers are satisfied. A typical day will involve delegating duties and tasks, making sure someone is out on sales calls, and taking care of our customers - which is top priority.
What was your motivation in applying?
The quick progression you can make, all within a team environment. I have been here only just over 10 months, but I was promoted to assistant manager in the tenth month, having completed the training programme. The promotion requires a lot of self-motivation, but I also got loads of help from my manager and area manager.
What did the application process involve?
Initially there was an online application. Then there was a first-stage interview, where I went to head office and met with a recruiter. Next I went to a branch and met a branch manager, was shown daily processes and sat in on tasks. Then I was called back for a final interview and had a driving test. A few weeks later, I was working for the company.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I love the variety - you're not stuck doing one thing. I can change it daily and change what other people in the office do. I have a lot of very good days, when we have a lot of happy customers, and when I get through everything I need to do. One of the main things we get ranked on is how happy our customers are, and it's good to see the fruits of that labour. Another thing I enjoy is that the company gives you a lot of autonomy early on - you can put forward suggestions that you would think would be successful. I have made recommendations that have worked in my branch and in other branches in my area.
Most challenging part of your job?
I suppose the most challenging aspect has been walking into a management position so early on, and getting exposure to the business at such an early stage. But I went into the position willingly, and I enjoy the challenge of learning things quickly. Another challenge is the way we run the business - we run the office with a set amount of resources. However, it can turn out to be satisfying. We could start the day with only a few cars outside, but if we get vehicles from other branches, by the end of the day we could have rented out triple the number we started with.
Advice to readers considering a career in your field:
Show your motivation to progress further. I was motivated to move quickly. Try to meet graduates with similar experiences, and listen to their advice. Make sure you have the drive and desire to advance. I have been able to use some of the skills I learnt at university, and have adapted them to a management role.
