What do you actually do?
I am a graduate on the National Skills Academy’s trainee scheme, through which I have been placed with a local authority in the planning and policy team. generic cialis 10mg The team produces the plans for adult services, the procedures for staff to work to and looks at new policy and legislation as it is released. I have been working on a project which will bring together health and social care professionals into single teams providing services to older people and people with physical disabilities. I have had the opportunity to see how things work in other social care settings too through learning days with the National Skills Academy and placements in both a Child Protection Team and an Integrated Social Work Team.
Why did you decide to go into this sector?
I wanted to work in an area that was about working with and for people and helping them to improve their quality of life. Social care also offers a massive amount of choice; it is a sector that is developing and changing all the time making it a really interesting area in which to work.
How did you find out about your particular course?

Would you undertake further training to further your career?
Even though I’ve had the opportunity to undertake a management qualification as part of my graduate scheme I would definitely look at further training as I think I still have a lot to learn.
What do you like most about what you do and are there any downsides?
I think the best thing about the scheme is the variety, because you don’t have a fixed, specific role I have the chance to try different things and have a go at things that I find interesting, this can have its downsides at first as it can be a bit confusing trying to find your place without having a definite role.
What do you think are the most important skills/strengths you need to make a success of what you do?
I think communication is really important and in social care this needs to be with the people you work with, other professionals and organisations and service users. You need to be organised and able to keep on top of things as there tend to be several things to do at once; time management and the ability to prioritise to make sure that everything gets done when it needs to be are essential.
What advice would you give graduates wishing to come into this sector?
