Career search gags: Journalist or landlord?

As many of us know by now, finding that great opportunity to sky-rocket you into your dream job is a much bigger challenge than previously imagined. The path is long, strenuous and not without its moments of flops and sheer funny situations. The good part is that these are the hilarious experiences you can share with friends and eventually remember the most.

In this Real World testimonial Nadine Naguib, student at Oxford University tells us her funniest job hunting moment!

I’d been trying to get into journalism. I had the idea, at least, that that is what I wanted to do.

Or what I thought I wanted. But I was too nervous to write for the student paper, and I couldn’t get work experience with any of my local papers. I’d send out message after message, and nothing.

So one day I decided to try something new. I had read an article that fascinated me, and resolved to attempt to get in touch with the writer. I found her email address, and sent her a plea for help. Unbelievably, she responded with her phone number. A few more emails confirmed a date for our phone conversation.

Heart pounding, hands trembling, I dialed her number. She picked up after the millionth ring – and yelled, “No, you shut up and listen to me – f*** you!! Sorry, arguing with my landlord. What did you want again?”

Needless to say, it was yet another crushing dead-end.
